Indiana State Fair

August 14, 2018

You didn’t think that I would miss an opportunity to go to the state fair and EAT did you? I have to admit, I’m a little disappointed in myself that I didn’t get to try more of the fair-fried delicacies than I did, but I wanted to get this post out before the fair is actually over. Aaron and I were planning on going back once this week before it’s over but I couln’t promise that I’d have content ready to share- so I figured a share now is better than later!

Some of my gal pals and I planned ahead and agreed we would all go together, I’ll tag all of their blogs for y’all, too!

Ashley of Fashionatelyme.com

Ashley of Fashionatelyme.com,  a champagne aficionado, blogs about fashion and beauty.

Kate of IndyIndy.com

My friend Kate actually did a post on what to eat at the state fair, too! Kate’s blog, IntoIndy is about food and all the delicious places to try in Indy and things to do. I have to admit her post is much more informational than mine, so if you’re looking for more details and more variety of food recs, be sure to check out her post and youtube video here: Kate’s State Fair review, on IntoIndy.com.

Brittney of The Pretty Plus

Brittney of The Pretty Plus, who by the way got the lamest fair food item she possibly could- french fries and tenders. I am still cracking up that she didn’t go for something with some more fair-flair but hey- the pregnant lady wants what the pregnant lady wants. Britt blogs about plus size fashion, meal prepping, PCOS and soon to be mommy tips!

Without further ado- let’s get to the noms!

Queue the DAIRY BARN. Dairy and carbs, my arch nemesis. Both aggrevate my digestive system, but TBH I don’t even care. On my list was the inside out grilled cheese, and damn it if I wasn’t going to have one.

Ok- all that keeps running through my head is this: “why didn’t I ever think to make a grilled cheese using Texas Toast?” Literally, I can eat my weight in Texas toast so it only makes sense to turn it into my favorite sandwich, right? I have to admit- that while all the right ingredients were present here- it wasn’t really executed as well as it could have been. The bread was soggy (i would have preferred a crispy crusty cheese on the outside) and the cheese slices on the indside of the sandwich, weren’t melted inside. Just plain cold cheese inside. (Yes, I’m aware that it looks melty on the edges). I didn’t eat the whole thing bc a. I was a little disappointed and b. I was hoping to save room for other artery-clogging goodness.

Indiana State Fair: dairy barn

This ice cream wasn’t mine, I just got creepy and took a pic of the people sitting next to us. Also from the dairy barn.

Of course the Greek girl goes for the Gyro, but I wasn’t complaining! I’m a fan!

You. guys. They had PIZZA ON A STICK.  in theory it sounds like the stuff my dreams are made of, but it was really just a calzone on a stick. And, because it was vertical on the stick, all the piping hot filling slide down inside to the bottom and the whole top half was empty dough. If you get one of these, sit down and grab a knife and a fork.

And of course you know I had to get a lemon shake-up. Which was also not fabulous. (guys, I’m feeling like I really struck out this time around!) I had about an inch-thick layer of pure sugar on the bottom, not shaken well and I kept getting giant swigs of sugar granules. I guess Aaron and I will just have to go back for round two.

Items I want to try next time  (if you’ve had tried these please let me know how they were and what you thought!)

  • Smores bacon on a stick
  • donut burger
  • deep fried PBJ

A couple words of advice for the fair-goer :

  1. wear closed toe shoes. this sounds like it would be a no-brainer but NOOOOO I wore flat sandals and my feet were literally covered in blackness by the end of the evening.
  2. if you’re going to bring a bag of some sort- make it a backpack or something you can sling over your shoulder. Hands-free is the way to go here kids.
  3. if you’re going to the fair with friends- RIDE and PARK together. we had a helluva time trying to figure out where to park and who was in which lot- in fact this wasted over an hour of our night, trying to park and then find each other.
  4. cash is king! Some vendors will take cards but I believe they charge extra for a processing fee.
  5. wear fat pants. (I would consider anything with an elastic waistband acceptable. Hey, or no pants at all. Hell, it is the state fair!)

If you get to go again, try the lemonade strawberry boba twister. That booth was near the circus tent area. I thought it was sweetened perfectly! Althought, the boba things in the bottom didn’t dissolve as fast as I would have liked.I also LOVED the birthday cake funnel cake which was near the dairy barn. They had other flavors too, like mint chocolate chip and red velvet.

Definitely want to get one of those birthday cake funnel cakes if I have room- we were supposed to go today but it was so rainy! BOO! Thanks for reading Kelly!
