If you follow Big Hair and Foodie Fare at all, you’ll know that in the last few months I’ve done a series on dips (because you can never have too much snack food). Is anyone else one of those people who will fill a plate up with dips at a party? (Guilty!) Welp, I’ve got one more to share with y’all tonight- quite appropriate with one of the biggest days of the year for SNACKS being tomorrow- Super Bowl!
So today’s dip- “French Onion Mushroom Dip” has been one of my favorite appetizers my Grandma Mary used to prepare. I remember sitting down and not stopping til it was gone. The flavor combo here is just too good to put down- french onion, mushroom and cream cheese paired with the slightly sweet King’s Hawaiian bread- YES PLEASE.
There’s a little story behind this recipe- and if you’re an IU grad (or a Hoosier fan) you can eat this with alumni pride! Both my parent’s attended IU beginning in the late 1970’s. One of my mom’s microbiology professors invited some of his students along with their parent’s to his home for a party to honor the seniors. This was one of the appetizers his wife made, and my Grandma Mary asked for the recipe. I’m sure my version of the recipe has changed a bit since the original- but I always love knowing the history behind a dish and what it means to people.
To this day- I still make it for my appetizer spread at home! It’s super easy and keeps well in the fridge too! Here’s the recipe- and don’t forget to scroll to the bottom for some other great dips I’ve featured that would be perfect for Superbowl Sunday if you need some last minute ideas! (Go Broncos!)
